G•MAC-Teaching Method - What is then that?

by Gloria Macchiavello-Pietsch

Dear readers & Spanish fans:
As I told you before, I`ve been looking -over 30 years – for the ideal way to teach languages.
Now, after many advanced courses, long teaching experience, regularly exchange with pupils,
students and colleagues, I believe I have found an optimal method to teach languages -
which has been practically called “G-MAC – Teaching Method” by our Publishing House.
Actually, this method is not quite new - it is developed on the basis of
well known proven facts, for example:

a) Latest scientific findings of learning psychology
b) Highly motivating multimedia techniques (film, video, cinema)
c) Proven elements of suggestive learning ( example: central appealing action of a book…)
d) The growing importance of an effective autonomous or self-directed learning.

However the special feature of the G-MAC -Teaching Method lies in the way in which the
above learning factors are linked and applied. Here is an example of linking and applying
using Chapter 1, Scene 1. To do this, please click on following video.

ESCENA 1: ¿VAMOS A LA FIESTA? – Shall we go to the party?

Leo: ¡Eh chicas! ¿Vamos a la fiesta de hoy?
Julia: Sí, naturalmente, ¡vamos!
Leo: ¿Cómo vamos: en metro, en bus o en taxi?
Lola: ¡Vámonos en taxi, ya es tarde!
Julia: ¡Vamos con Juan!
Leo: Y ... ¿tiene coche?
Julia: Claro. ¡Mira, ya está allí!

If you click on Video 1 with the subtitles you can simultaneously see the corresponding
plot of text, hear the language in Spanish and easily understand its content, not only from
the English subtitles, but also:

a) through the gestures and expressive-bodily movements of the protagonists
b) through extra showing or visualization of metro, bus, taxi, coche, Juan
c) by repeating the word “vamos” (shall we go?) – as the central idea of the scene
d) by choosing easy-to-understand words such as: Eh, chicas, fiesta, sí, naturalmente,
claro, allí …

Besides that, the LINKS: “Traducción” if you wish to have the whole translation of the scene
and “Vocabulario”, if you wish to look for the special meaning of some words.

However, the most important function of the Video in this context is not only to
understand and learn the foreign language more easily & faster, but also to greatly
increase the motivation to learn. This is especially successful when the videos form
the continuous plot of a book, so is the case in e-Spanish A1.

I will tell you more about this topic - “proven elements of suggestopaedic learning” - later on.
Please write to me, if you have any questions. I will answer you as soon as possible!

Yours
Gloria Macchiavello-Pietsch
